Cyclo-cross

If you’ve ever kicked around the idea of racing, cyclo-cross (CX) is a great place to start. The competition is friendly, the crashes are slow and used bikes can be picked up reasonably (or races can be done on a mountain bike). With races from under-8s to over-50s, boys, girls, ladies and men, there really is something for everyone. The courses are compact and make for great spectating too.

If you are interested in racing with the club, or if you just want to find out more, then email our off-road secretary. Club members typically race in the Wessex League, where events are in the Winchester, Andover, Newbury area, or in the Central League where races are in the Bedfont, Reading and Milton Keynes area. Most races can be reached within an hour’s drive from Farnborough and Camberley.

We’re very happy to show new riders the ropes, as well as learn from more experienced riders. We’ll also lend you a cyclo-cross bike if you fancy having a go.

Check out the cyclo-cross reports from some of our members to find out more about what it’s like.

If you want to learn a bit more about taking up cyclo-cross, then the presentation slides from our cyclo-cross-themed club night from October 2018 will tell you more.

Also, this article from road.cc is a good starting point – Everything you wanted to know about cyclo-cross but were too afraid to ask

British Cycling also have a cyclo-cross section on their website, with several videos demonstrating how to ride various types of terrain, how to carry and shoulder your bike, etc. Check it out.

The club is officially affiliated to the Wessex CX League and individually with the Central CX League.
