An Audience with… Keith Griffiths ~ on Friday 29th September 2023

It has been an absolute pleasure to host the series of an “Audience with …” for the FCCC Club Nights during this past twelve months or so.

Guests ranging from the formidable End to End in under 48 hours (Dick Poole), to our South African Cape Epic and UCI E-world Champion Cyclists (Shawn Mitchley and Aaron Borrill, respectively), to the former UK National Champion guest (Richard Prebble) and to the most latterly Meet Team GB (Kendra and Jez Hall, Eliot Digby-Jones, Ruth Jones and Morag McDowall).

Each time we meet these guests we are greeted by humble people with huge achievements in cycling with fascinating stories to tell.

This person is no exception. He told me he doesn’t get out of bed for anything less than 200 kilometers. He’s not joking.

With rides like ‘Paris-Brest-Paris’ or ‘London-Edinburgh-London’ these distances speak openly for themselves. He competes in what we know as ‘Audaxes’.

It is an ultra-sport like not too many others.

In privately preparing for meeting him, I’ve come to learn that Audax means “courageous, spirited, foolhardy, presumptuous and rash’.

Well, we can find out if that is true when we meet our next guest who has kindly agreed to give up his time to come talk with me at the Club Night on Friday 29 September 2023 at our usual venue.

An Audience with Richard Prebble

FCCC Club Night – Friday 24th March at 7pm

In life you find personalities that tell you how great they are. You know, the sort who are all over the news while there are others who simply say it through the things they do and the actions they take (outside of the limelight) without feeling the need to constantly blow their own trumpet!

My guest next week is in the latter category. This picture above speaks volumes. His name is among other household names in the world of cycling that some of you may be more familiar with but the table says it all.

Come and hear Richard’s story next Friday at the FCCC Club Night at the Aldershot & Fleet Rugby Club.

I’m posting this as a news item to reach those of you who regularly tell me you did not know about the FCCC Club Night. Well now you do! 😊

Kind regards,

Paul Hosemann (Chair)

The “Riding at FCCC” Workshop – a first for FCCC!

Our first workshop will be on Saturday March 18th at 1.30pm. It is free to our members.

Put it in your diaries now!

Together with Avanti Cycling and our friend Greg Woodford, we have developed a new workshop to bring our members together to meet one another and learn more about the Club – what we do and how we do it?

It is open to all members across all ride disciplines. Even though it was initially developed with new members in mind it would benefit from a mix of attendance across all the whole membership. We can all learn something from each other. It’s clear to me that many of of our existing members are not fully aware about what we offer or indeed the rules of the road or what we mean by the DIRT Trails. Some members are not even aware that we post rides and news on our own Website!

During the afternoon you will learn more about the club, the activities within it and how it all hangs together. More importantly we will talk about the pro and cons of group riding, the rules of the road and what the Highway Code truly prescribes for riding two abreast as well as many ideas on riding safely on our off-road trails.

With Greg being available you will have a great insight into the law affecting riding as well as his insights and tips for off-road riding skills given his work in the early development of the cycling code for Cycling UK and, in part, the British Cycling’s off-road guidance/rules. I’m sure with his expertise you’ll leave with a greater confidence in, and knowledge of, cycling generally.

We will discuss the rides we offer, what we expect from you and what you expect from FCCC as well as guide you through the training and plans we have for our membership for 2023 and beyond.

Every organisation is only as good as its people. With my goal in mind of “getting us all out riding together more regularly” this is a great place to start those deliberations.

Please come along and join us at the first of the meetings planned for 2023, for an informative afternoon on Saturday 18th March at 1.30pm . Tea and coffee will be provided and maybe an odd biscuit or slice of cake too!

This will likely be held at the Scout Hut in Yateley. More details of the actual venue will be provided nearer the time.

Although we will be a little more formalised than the gathering (shown in the picture below) by using a classroom style event it will still be a chance to catch up with some familiar faces at FCCC. 😎

Please write to me at chair@fccc.org.uk if you wish to join the workshop. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Best regards to everyone,

Paul Hosemann (Chair)

Ride Leading – That Old Chestnut! ~ March 25th 2023

Our NEXT Ride Leading (Road) Workshop will be on Saturday March 25, 2023

Yes, it’s that time of the year again as we look to secure more ride leaders across our range of weekly rides. We are also developing an off-road ride leading workshop – so watch this space.

We don’t expect you to turn up week in week out as a ride leader but we would like more members to offer to lead rides to spread the load. Out of the 225 members we are reliant on less than a dozen members regularly offering rides but plenty more of you asking for a ride! 😊

Our next Ride Leading Workshop – which will be led by Greg Woodford from Avanti Cycling will be on Saturday March 25th commencing at 1.30pm – 5.30pm.

It is both a classroom and on-bike training session so you will need to bring a road bike on the day!

In the past there was no obligation to lead even though you had been trained, which doesn’t make a huge amount of sense to me – even though I understand the strategy at that time.

This time I would if you want to be trained as a Ride Leader then I ask that you do help us lead rides! Thank you . 🙏

There are no doubt many barriers holding some of you back. We can discuss them all at the workshop! And allay even fears you have. 🙂

Please come and get trained with FCCC and Avanti Cycling. I am even willing to retrain those of you who attended the course before but who need a final nudge to lead a ride.

May I thank those of you who have recently offered to lead but want some formal training first! 😎

Please write to me at chair@fccc.org.uk if you wish to join the workshop. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Annual General Meeting 2023

On 24 February 2023 this will be an AGM like no other.

If nothing else you can come along and see if anyone is ready, willing and able to challenge me for the role of Chair at FCCC. Any potential candidates may wish for me to send them my time-sheets since assuming the role in 2022 before they make their final bid.

All part-joking aside there is much to be debated and agreed upon.

We need 18 to make a quorum but given the significance of what we are doing at FCCC I’d like support from more of you. Many of you said you want to help well this is one small way you can help me!

I’ll be covering the plans for FCCC for 2023, our achievements thus far, new member training, ideas for new Time Trialling initiatives plus much more. With Laura Key as our female Ambassador I’d be grateful if more of our growing number of female members would come along and cast their votes too.

We may even throw in a guest speaker who joined the Camberley Wheelers at the age of 14 back in the 1950’s who rode with some of those in our hall of fame who might be willing to come along to tell his story.

It will be at the Aldershot & Fleet Rugby Club on Friday 24 February 2023. Doors open at 7pm. Official business commences at 8pm.

Kind regards

Paul Hosemann

CLUB NIGHT REMINDER – 30 SEPTEMBER AT 7pm

So ANOTHER COUNTDOWN begins.

NEXT CLUB NIGHT – is Fri Sept 30th

If your life is anything like mine you’ll find some most unexpected events and people will distract you in ways you would never imagine. Not always in a pleasant way!

So much so you take your eye off the calendar.

So here is my attempt to put it back on your radar.

The next FCCC Club Night on Friday 30 September 2022 – 7pm to 10pm at the Aldershot & Fleet Rugby Club.

The interview with Dick Poole (pictured) commences at 8pm.

Please come along.

Please be kind enough to tell us too so we (Dom Crapart our Chef) can cater enough food for everyone.

Last time we had 26 say they were coming and 42 turned up. Please use the FCCC FB events page to put your name down as attending or email us at social@fccc.org.uk

We would like more than 42 this time 🙏☑️

Thank you

Paul Hosemann – Chair

Our Next Club Night is once again ready for launch – on Friday 30th September

Just as NASA is putting up new rockets into space again, FCCC is waiting to launch the next in its series of ‘An Audience with… Club Social Nights’ too.

We are counting down the days now to the next Club Night.

All last minute preparations are being made for another wonderful evening!

Doors open at 7pm on Friday 30th September. A small buffet will be provided by our Club Chef, Dom Crapart, once again.

Our main guest of honour, Club President – Dick Poole – photographed below – will be interviewed at 8pm.

Come and listen to how a human being would not only want to ride LeJOG in less than 48 hours but how he did it too!

Please don’t forget or seek to claim you never knew about it!

Last time we had 42 members show up for a fun evening. Let’s do even better this time!

The venue:

Aldershot and Fleet Rugby Club at Aldershot Park

Heron Wood Road, Aldershot GU12 4AL

No Excuse to forget. Friday 30 September – Club Night

PUT IT IN YOUR DIARY right now.

Our next Club Night will be on Friday 30 September at the Aldershot & Fleet Rugby Club from 7pm to 10pm.

Our next guest for “An Audience with…” will be the man who rode LEJOG (or as he likes to call it, the ‘End to End’) in less than 48 hours for the first time).

Come listen to Dick Poole, our Club President. Maybe he’ll explain why on earth he chose to do it in less than two days. I gather it wasn’t just to save the money on hotels…

Last time we had 42 members come to make it a great evening. Let’s try and beat that.

Paul Hosemann

Our 3rd Club Night will be on Friday 25 November. Save the date!

PUT IT IN YOUR DIARY right now.

Our 3rd Club Night will be on Friday 25th November at the Aldershot & Fleet Rugby Club from 7pm to 10pm.

It will be our last Social Event for 2022 (dare I say before Christmas). Come along and wish your committee members and fellow club riders a Merry Christmas and share an early mince pie or whatever takes your fancy.

Our guests for “An Audience with…” currently scheduled for that evening will be two guests from British Cycling. Come listen to their interview and hear what they have to say.
