Lasham Gliding Club cafe

Denise received the following from a member of another local club who use the Lasham Gliding club as a cafe stop:

Just to let you know that, further to an encounter at Lasham on Saturday, I feel I should let you know that in the interest of accomodating the kind hospitality of the gliding club, should our VC Godalming members visit we have been requested to do the following (I only mention this to point out that feelings run high, and we should consider their kind request based on a subsection of the gliding community's views):

  • Cyclists and the general public are welcome.
  • Cyclists are respectfully requested to park bicycles against the wooden railings separating the private members' apron car parking from the cafe area (i.e. at the back of the grassed area behind the cafe).
  • Please avoid parking cycles in the entranceway, on the patio area itself, and against the memorial/metal globe. It is not obvious that this metal globe is indeed a memorial to a recently departed and well respected glider pilot, whose widow still visits Lasham regularly.
(Actually, as an aside, whenever I'm up there I clear up my purchases to the tray return area, as we have been requested to do so in the past - one assumes that this is only because it's general practice there and serves to keep the costs down).

Local Audax Events

AudaxukThanks very much to Steve for this guide to local Audax events. For those that haven't done an Audax, he describes the events as:

  • The object is to complete the distance within a (generous) cut-off time - its not a race!
  • There are no marshals and the road is not marked: navigation is via a route sheet / GPS / or create your own map
  • no broom-wagon - carry sufficient spares/tools (mobile, money/credit card...)
  • a few controls - simple questions to prove you been there + cafe/shop stops to collect stickers/receipts
  • lights are recommended for 200km events
  • entry via form posted 2 weeks prior to event
  • insurance for the event is £2 extra, but CTC/BC/Audax membership covers this
  • Routes are designed by locals to avoid traffic and to see the best of the English countryside which is good for getting in the miles, but the condition of the back-roads can be less than perfect!

Brussels to London Ride - still places available

alt

I am arranging a charity cycle ride for 300 people from Brussels to London this July 4th-7th and I wondered if this might interest your club members?   It will be a brilliant event over some beautiful scenery, and undoubtedly a great challenge. Details are available here but what makes this ride unique is that all riders will be able to watch the finale of the second stage of the Tour de France and get the opportunity to meet Team HTC Columbia afterwards.  Furthermore one rider will win Mark Cavendish's signed Scott bike that he rode on the 2009 Tour de France.  Pricewise we ask for a £150 registration and a sponsorship pledge of £1000 - this includes the Eurostar to Brussels, all food and drink, accommodation, vehicle support, and most importantly includes a significant donation to the children who benefit from our programmes in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world. Discounts are available for groups of 5 or more. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
