Free Session at Reading Track
As those that attended the AGM or looked at Dick's report on the accounts will have seen, the club made an unexpected surplus in 2013. We decided to use that surplus to encourage competition and skills development.
To that end, we are planning to run four evening sessions at Reading track that will be subsidised by the club for attending members. (The normal price is £5.55). The next session is on Tuesday 3rd June at the Palmer Park velodrome. Start time is 8:15pm, but best to be there at 8:00. No special bike is required - a road bike is fine.
Nigel (our Level 2 coach) will be there to help by training on the use of the track and track ettiquette. He will also be giving guidance on group riding techniques, such as "through and off". Note that, as a result, the Eelmoor event on the 3rd is cancelled.
The last couple of events have been very enjoyable and worthwhile and it's a great way to spend an hour and a half on your bike without having to worry about potholes or motorised traffic!
If you plan to come along to the session, for planning purposes, please go to the event and select the "I will attend the event" option and click on the update button. Thanks!

Scheme for Support of Open TT & Race Riders (2014)
This year, we are repeating last year's scheme to reward those that are taking part in open TTs and in racing.
Where riders commit by the end of May to either, during the year:
- Riding in 6 open TT events
- Riding in 6 race events
the club will refund either
- (for TTs), half the cost of entry and
- for road races, half the cost of a BC licence or Surrey League membership fees.
The maximum amount claimable for TT riders is £50. Note that the committment has to be made by April or May, but the rides can be done anytime during the year (before or after the committment).
Riders that intend to apply, should advise Bob that they intend to take part and then submit evidence to Dick of participation and cost once they have done the 6 events. Riders should be 'of good standing' - that is to say they have to be paid up members and met membership requirements. They should also compete in club kit.
We had been hoping to introduce a wider scheme to reward competitors and helpers next year, but we're short of a volunteer to administer it. If you can help, please contact Bob.

Help Needed For 12Hr TT at Newbury
Newbury CC are running a 12h time trial on 15th of June, using the A31 between Coxbridge roundabout and Chawton roundabout. Obviously, with a long event such as this, they will need a lot of help with marshalling etc, otherwise a few people will be standing there for a very long time. Even a couple of hours will be extremely helpful.
If you are able to spare some time to help to support the event, please contact Donald.
ps entries close on 3rd June, so there's still time to enter if you fancy a serious workout!
Runways End Event 20th September
The club has been offered a space at the Runways End Activity Centre. It could be a good chance to promote the club at an event that is expected to attract several hundred people. If any club members are able to help out on the 20th September (perhaps with a roller competition?), let David know.
I got this message through from Mike at 1st Gear Cycles.
"We are pleased to finally announce that the Eelmoor race series will be going ahead this year and will be starting on the 28th May.
We will still be holding youth races, E,1,2 AND 3/4's.
There will be 9 races overall with 2 breaks in between for Guildford Crit and Farnborough Airshow.
The format will stay the same with Youth category D and E at 6:20pm, Youth
category A,B and C at 6:30pm and E/1/2, 3/4 and women at 7:00pm."

Our fastest course saw a good turn out this week.
Club Training and Coaching Sessions
"As from Tuesday May 13th Nigel Fletcher (BC level 2 road and time trial coach) will be running (free) open training and coaching sessions at Eelmore driver training circuit in Aldershot from 7:00pm onwards. These will run throughout the summer and will cater for all abilities and ages from near novice to experienced riders. Coaching will be available, so if you are looking to ride your first time trial or improve your riding technique and fitness come along. For further information contact Nigel or simply turn up on the night.
Eelmore driver training circuit is located on the A323 Fleet road approx 1 mile from main A325 Farnborough to Aldershot road. No parking is available at the circuit but there is a public car park 200m along the Fleet road towards Aldershot."
Registration by clicking the I'll attend button is preferred so that we know how many people are coming, but not compulsory.
Even if you have ridden in groups a lot, this kind of training can make a big difference to how well you can do it which
- will make you faster or help you to save energy in a group
- make you a safer and better rider for the others in the group!
Road Race May 11th - Thanks
I got this from Nigel:
"On behalf of Gareth and myself I would like to thank everyone for supporting the clubs road race on Sunday and making it a huge success. All we received were complements from riders and Commissaries at the event on how professional and helpful all the marshals and helpers were. It was definitely a team effort and helps keep cycle road racing on the open roads. Let’s hope that we can get some club members riding our own event next year?
I hope everyone enjoyed the experience and I hope to see you all again same time next year.
Thanks also to Gareth and Nigel for their efforts in organising the event. For those of you that need plenty of warning, your next (and last chance) to volunteer this year is the Xmas 10 on 21st December which Jane is running.
